Nurses Rock
Nurses Rock!
This May, hospitals all over the world will be celebrating the special kind of clinician that goes above and beyond every day in their many nursing roles.
Keeping Patients Safe
While nurses are empowered to perform patient-based care in a variety of settings, one of the biggest roles of nurses is to ensure safety, satisfaction and positive clinical outcomes for their patients. As you can imagine, this is no easy task.
The Nurses’ Choice Awards Presented by Tangent Medical
“Save one life, and you’re a hero. Save a hundred lives, and you’re a nurse.” Nearly everyone has had their life touched by a nurse in some way. We all know that nurses are the unsung heroes of hospitals and other centers of care. Each May, we celebrate a year’s worth of heroic duty during National Nurses Week. In 2013, we will honor nurses from May 6th through May 12th.
I'm a Believer
I’m a believer in a closed, integrated IV catheter system. As a nurse of many years, I have come to witness firsthand the importance of best practice, especially when it comes to routine everyday procedures like an IV catheter insertion. But how often do we see “best practices” actually in use?
Every Week Should Be Nurses Appreciation Week
What does nursing mean to you? Nurse is a broad term used to describe many healthcare workers who perform patient-based care in a variety of settings. A nurse's duties and title will vary depending on educational background, certifications and licenses. In the United States alone, there are about 2.6 million nursing professionals. Even in tough economic times, the demand for qualified nurses is strong.

Experience NovaCath at the ENA Leadership Conference
Does your hospital use mechanical stabilization devices for peripheral IV catheters? That’s the question we are posing this year at the ENA Leadership Conference 2013. The conference runs from February 28th – March 2nd. We are inviting ENA attendees to experience NovaCath at our Booth #309.
This Month’s Featured Start-Up
With just weeks to go in our commercialization process, the NovaCath Integrated IV Catheter System continues to get buzz in our industry for its revolutionary design concepts that address healthcare worker safety and patient satisfaction.
Start-Up Recognized for Innovation in IV Therapy
There are many definitions for the word “innovation.” It could mean a new idea, method, device, or product according to the Webster’s dictionary. What this definition does not touch upon is the potential for innovation to change or revolutionize the way things have been done in the past.
Flu Season and a Case for the Closed System
According to an article published in The Huffington Post, the 2013 flu season arrived about a month early this year.
Make Blood Control A Priority When Evaluating New Technology in 2013
It’s been an exciting two weeks at Tangent Medical as we celebrated the issuance of our first patent (US Patent Number 8,323,249), were selected as Finalists in the 2013 Business Excellence Awards (Most Innovative Company), and secured a Series B round of funding for $8.6 million.
From Concept to Reality

AVA Validates NovaCath’s Innovation
Last week’s Association for Vascular Access (AVA) conference proved to be an eye-opening event not just for the Tangent Medical team who got to witness first-hand the response to our flagship NovaCath Secure IV Catheter System, but to the AVA meeting attendees, who stopped by our booth to receive the AVA Scientific Proceedings promotional CD.
Tangent Medical at the 2012 AVA Conference
As Tangent Medical prepares to attend the Association for Vascular Access (AVA) Conference, we’ve been reflecting on our time working in the Medical Innovation Center. The innovation process we went through was influenced by Clayton Christenson’s book The Innovator’s Dilemma – and now he’s co-authored another book, The Innovator’s DNA. In this book, Christenson explains with his co-author Dr.
Thinking Outside the Box: No more “J-Loop”
Can you imagine IV therapy without a "J-Loop"? You know, that awkward and snag-prone loop of tubing that is part of all current peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC). It’s the part of the IV system that restricts patient movement and so often causes catheter destabilization and dislodgment. It’s the tubing often seen covered with an abundance of tape or other adhesive dressings.

Innovate. Inspire. Infuse.
Our recent customer experiences at the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) and Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) meetings have been nothing less than remarkable and only validated the belief in our company tagline which states – Innovate. Inspire. Infuse. I’d like to elaborate on our customer experiences and belief in this tagline.
NovaCath™ Secures FDA 510 (k) Clearance
Some say it takes a village to raise a family. When you combine innovation and medical device development, it takes a team of savvy engineers, market researchers, clinicians, and business professionals to transform unmet medical needs into game-changing products. Our team is poised and ready to do just that!
Control Your Exposure
Sometimes we don’t have control over a situation and that can be frustrating. When it comes to healthcare worker safety and blood control technology, however, clinicians would be surprised at the positive impact they can make by advocating for the most advanced technologies available to keep them safe from blood exposure.
ENA Conference To Address Healthcare Worker Safety
As we head to San Diego to participate in the 2012 Annual ENA Conference (September 13th – 15th), I’ve been reflecting on the importance of healthcare worker safety, especially in the Emergency Department’s (E.D.’s) care environment.
Calling All Clinicians – How Do You Manage IV Tubing Challenges?

Innovate, Inspire, Infuse Contest a Success
All of us at Tangent Medical would like to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all our supporters and new friends who participated in the “Innovate, Inspire, Infuse” iPad2 sweepstakes this summer. We were impressed with the response from all participants who connected with us through the many channels of social media.
In Harm’s Way
A few weeks ago Tangent Medical posed the question, “What inspires you about patient care?” I want to share a few of the comments because I found them inspiring!
“To me, healthcare is synonymous with life care.”
“I want my patients to be treated as if they were my family member. I would want the best care for my family, so I give the best care to my patients because they are someone else's family member.”
Congrats to our 2nd iPad Winner – One More to Go!
The results are in for the second round of our Innovate, Inspire, Infuse Contest: Melissa D., a nursing student at the University of Michigan, is the second of three winners to receive a free iPad 2 from Tangent Medical!
For the past five weeks, we’ve been connecting with clinicians and nursing students through social media.
When It Comes to Safety, Status Quo Must Go
Do you remember the days before seat belts, child safety seats and airbags? All of these consumer safety products were developed, evolved and eventually became mandatory items in all vehicles. It begs the question why we thought nothing of driving without these safe-guards?
Congratulations to our First Innovate, Inspire and Infuse iPad 2 Winner
The results are in for the first round of our Innovate, Inspire, Infuse Contest: Rachel W., an ER technician (and concurrent nursing student) at Allegiance Health in Jackson, MI, is the first of three winners to receive a free iPad 2 from Tangent Medical!
IV Site Assessment and Stabilization
The Infusion Nurses Society (INS) has recently published a position paper entitled ‘Recommendations for Frequency of Assessment of the Short Peripheral Catheter Site'.
Patient Satisfaction Makes a Difference
A satisfied patient is a tall order to fill, especially since there are a variety of factors that play into achieving satisfaction during a hospital stay. In addition to patient outcomes, room cleanliness, nurse response time and pain management are just some of the things that are taken into consideration.
What Our Customers’ Think Matters
Innovation is the cornerstone of the NovaCath™ Secure IV Catheter System which is currently 510(k) pending. The product design was based on extensive clinical immersion and research into the needs of both patient and healthcare workers.
