Each day this week, during National Nurses Week, Tangent Medical proudly honors one of the five national recipients of the Tangent Medical 2013 Nurses’ Choice Awards.

Yesterday, we announced the 27 finalists across the USA and Canada and from that group, 5 nurses went on to become national recipients of the Tangent Medical 2013 Nurses’ Choice Awards.

Earlier today, we announced the 27 finalists of the Tangent Medical 2013 Nurses’ Choice Awards, five of whom will go on to become national winners and receive $300 in educational gifts. Each day this week, during National Nurses Week, one recipient will be featured.

This May, hospitals all over the world will be celebrating the special kind of clinician that goes above and beyond every day in their many nursing roles.

“Save one life, and you’re a hero. Save a hundred lives, and you’re a nurse.” Nearly everyone has had their life touched by a nurse in some way. We all know that nurses are the unsung heroes of hospitals and other centers of care. Each May, we celebrate a year’s worth of heroic duty during National Nurses Week. In 2013, we will honor nurses from May 6th through May 12th.

What does nursing mean to you? Nurse is a broad term used to describe many healthcare workers who perform patient-based care in a variety of settings. A nurse's duties and title will vary depending on educational background, certifications and licenses. In the United States alone, there are about 2.6 million nursing professionals. Even in tough economic times, the demand for qualified nurses is strong.

Does your hospital use mechanical stabilization devices for peripheral IV catheters? That’s the question we are posing this year at the ENA Leadership Conference 2013. The conference runs from February 28th – March 2nd. We are inviting ENA attendees to experience NovaCath at our Booth #309.

There are many definitions for the word “innovation.” It could mean a new idea, method, device, or product according to the Webster’s dictionary. What this definition does not touch upon is the potential for innovation to change or revolutionize the way things have been done in the past.

It’s been an exciting two weeks at Tangent Medical as we celebrated the issuance of our first patent (US Patent Number 8,323,249), were selected as Finalists in the 2013 Business Excellence Awards (Most Innovative Company), and secured a Series B round of funding for $8.6 million.

Last week’s Association for Vascular Access (AVA) conference proved to be an eye-opening event not just for the Tangent Medical team who got to witness first-hand the response to our flagship NovaCath Secure IV Catheter System, but to the AVA meeting attendees, who stopped by our booth to receive the AVA Scientific Proceedings promotional CD. 

Can you imagine IV therapy without a "J-Loop"? You know, that awkward and snag-prone loop of tubing that is part of all current peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC). It’s the part of the IV system that restricts patient movement and so often causes catheter destabilization and dislodgment. It’s the tubing often seen covered with an abundance of tape or other adhesive dressings.

Our recent customer experiences at the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) and Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) meetings have been nothing less than remarkable and only validated the belief in our company tagline which states – Innovate. Inspire. Infuse. I’d like to elaborate on our customer experiences and belief in this tagline.

Sometimes we don’t have control over a situation and that can be frustrating. When it comes to healthcare worker safety and blood control technology, however, clinicians would be surprised at the positive impact they can make by advocating for the most advanced technologies available to keep them safe from blood exposure.

A few weeks ago Tangent Medical posed the question, “What inspires you about patient care?”  I want to share a few of the comments because I found them inspiring!

“To me, healthcare is synonymous with life care.”

“I want my patients to be treated as if they were my family member. I would want the best care for my family, so I give the best care to my patients because they are someone else's family member.”

Do you remember the days before seat belts, child safety seats and airbags?  All of these consumer safety products were developed, evolved and eventually became mandatory items in all vehicles. It begs the question why we thought nothing of driving without these safe-guards?
